Nokia 3310 – The Return Of A Classic

Iconic handset relaunched with month-long battery and SNAKE

Nokia unveiled the re-vamped 3310 model at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) in Barcelona, Spain, confirming weeks of rumours. The new handset will have a colour screen, battery that lasts for a month with 22 hours of talk-time, and cult game, Snake. Available in an array of bright colours, it also boasts a two-megapixel camera and limited internet capabilities.

In an age of nostalgia, the anticipation surrounding a device that was first launched 17 years ago comes as no surprise. Especially considering the enormous popularity of the 2000 handset which sold 126 million. In fact, for much of the noughties Nokia was the undisputed mobile phone titan, but with the rise of smartphones the Finnish multinational struggled to keep up with the technology, and the phone was phased out. The logic behind the new 3310 therefore, is that with so much information at our fingertips the phone will provide respite.

Chief executive Arto Nummela told the BBC: “It's almost like a digital detox or a holiday phone. If you want to switch off to an extent but you still need to have a [mobile] lifeline, it's a brilliant solution. Why wouldn't you buy this like candy? If you see this hanging on the shelf at the checkout in a [see-through] package, then you'd just buy it as an accessory.”

The new handset will cost 49 Euros (£40 approx) and is expected to be launched later this year.
