An Emotional Ellen Receives Medal of Freedom

President Obama awards highest civilian honour to the ‘courageous’ television host

Ellen DeGeneres was one of 21 recipients honoured with the Presidential medal of Freedom at the White House on Tuesday the 22nd of November. The prestigious award is the highest an American civilian can receive and is granted to those who have contributed to notable change and progress in the United States.

A White House aide took the opportunity to commend Ellen, who is married to actress Portia De Rossi, on her phenomenal career and her courage at coming out in an era where gay marriage was not widely accepted. He noted that thanks to Ellen and her tireless work, LGBT rights have progressed enormously. The 58-year-old who stood beside President Obama, appeared to grow emotional throughout the speech and teared up when the medal was placed around her neck.

“In a career spanning three decades, Ellen DeGeneres has lifted our spirits and brought joy to our lives as a stand-up comic, actor and television star,” he said. “At a pivotal moment, her courage and candour helped change the hearts and minds of millions of Americans, accelerating our nations constant drive towards equality and acceptance for all.”

He concluded the speech by referring to Ellen’s beloved Finding Nemo character, Dory: “Ellen DeGeneres has showed us that a single individual can make the world a more fun, more open more loving place, so long as we just keep swimming.”

Among other recipients this year were music Legends Bruce Springsteen and Diana Ross, Hollywood star Tom Hanks and Bill and Melinda Gates. As Obama’s presidency draws to a close there is a lingering air of uncertainty in America, but at the ceremony spirits were high as the White House officials and honourees alike participated in the Mannequin Challenge.
