Cosmopolitan magazine has stated that it is unfair for a woman to be judged by her number of sexual partners.
According to the publication, females should never feel pressured to discuss details of past lovers when they enter new relationships.
"Is it absolutely essential to have the 'number chat'? I don't think so," said features editor Fiona Cowood.
She explained that compatibility, attraction and enjoyment of each other's company are far more important factors to consider, adding that "a number is just a number".
"Forming a new relationship should be all about mutual attraction in the present," Ms Cowood asserted.
Recent research by MyVoucher-codes.co.uk found that more than a third of UK women have been untruthful when revealing how many people they have had sex with.
However, it appears that men have bigger hang-ups about such affairs, with 43 per cent having lied to new partners.
