Wimbledon Begins

Crack open the bubbly, pour some fresh cream over your British strawberries and get ready for two cracking weeks of tennis.

Having been so enthralled in the World Cup, it’s possible you might have forgotten about one of the biggest events in the UK’s sporting calendar… Wimbledon!

Despite the news that British superstar and two-time Wimbledon champ Andy Murray has had to pull out over health concerns, the atmosphere surrounding the tournament is as ebullient as ever. With the sun blazing it’s unlikely that many matches will be postponed by rain, and even the co2 shortage won’t affect the 29,000 bottles of champagne that are expected to be quaffed with fans turning up in droves days before the event even began.

So with the ex-world number one out of the running, who can we expect to wow on Centre Court? Swiss superstar Roger Federer begins his campaign for a record-extending ninth Wimbledon men's singles title today playing Serbia's Dusan Lajovic, as will seven-time champion Serena Williams, who is still finding her form following the birth of her daughter.

Hopes are also high for British number ones Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta who will both play on Tuesday, though realistically it may still come down to Federer and long-time rival Novak Djokovic. Having said that, Croatia’s Marin Cilic, Germany’s Alexander Zverev and Austria’s Dominic Thiem all have the potential to find themselves in the men’s final.

With USA superstar Serena not quite back to her former self, the women’s title race is a little more open, with world number one and 2018 French Open winner Simona Halep, two-time Wimbledon champ Petra Kvitova, Spanish star Garbine Muguruza and world number two Caroline Wozniacki all fighting for their place in history.

As is the case every year, tickets are available throughout the tournament, but expect queues if buying on the day.
