Solange Bags First Number One Album

Beyonce's little sister grabs Billboard 200 top spot as the pair become the first sisters ever to both have number one albums.

Solange Knowles’ third studio album, A Seat at the Table, which sold 72,000 equivalent album units in its first week, is officially number one in the U.S. Released on September 30th, the same day Bon Iver also released their highly-anticipated third studio album 22, A Million, A Seat at the Table is a deeply personal record with elements psychedelic soul and funk.

Solange has long been outspoken on issues of race and her role as a black woman in society and the album is a deep exploration of black culture. Featuring spoken work interludes from her parents about their own experience with racism and guest spots from artists diverse as Tweet, Lil Wayne and Sampha.

The achievement makes Solange and Beyonce the only sisters ever to both have number one albums. Earlier this year Beyoncé earned her 6th No. 1 album with visual masterpiece, Lemonade meaning the siblings both debuted a solo project at number one in the same year, a feat only achieved once before by Michael Jackson and Janet Jackson in 2001.

Beyonce, who just wrapped up her Formation World Tour in New Jersey on Friday, shared a congratulatory shout-out to Solange on Instagram on Sept 30 as the album was released.

'Congrats to my sister on creating this beautiful work of art,' Beyonce wrote. 'I could not be more proud of you.'
