Dame Judi Claims Record Eighth Olivier Award

Dame Judi wins Best Supporting Actress at the Olivier Awards for her performance alongside Sir Kenneth Branagh in Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale...

National treasure Dame Judi Dench was the toast of the Olivier Awards on Sunday night, securing a record eighth win for her performance as Paulina in Kenneth Branagh Production of The Winter’s Tale.

Speaking to the BBC
, Dench said she was "rather overcome.” “I didn't expect it... it feels terrific," she said, before adding that although the award was “lovely to have…in actual fact it belongs to all those people [in The Winter’s Tale] as much as it belongs to me.”

Dench made her stage debut in 1957, and over the course of her theatrical career has won praise for her many Shakespearean roles – such as Hamlet’s Ophelia and Lady Macbeth, the latter of which she won her first Olivier for in 1977. Later on, Dench also won praise on the silver screen, securing an Oscar win for her role in Shakespeare in Love, before taking on the iconic role of M in the James Bond franchise.

Other big Olivier winners were Kenneth Cranham, who beat Benedict Cumberbatch and Sir Kenneth Branagh to the prestigious Best Actor award and Kinky Boots, including music by Emmy award winning artist Cyndi Lauper, won two other prizes.
