The Sopranos, Lost, Game of Thrones, True Detective…Westworld? That’s certainly what the executives at HBO headquarters will be hoping for, as the latter sci-fi show (based on a 1973 movie of the same name) debuted last night to the best reception since Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson teamed up for some police-work and philosophical pontificating in 2014.
And with their latest (and greatest) combination of violence, fantasy and unexpected full-frontal nudity about to enter its penultimate season, HBO will be hoping that Westworld – a futuristic saga that involves violence, robots and unexpected full-frontal nudity – can prove another massive success for the network.
Starring Anthony Hopkins, Ed Harris, Thandie Newton, James Marsden and Evan Rachel Wood, with executive producer JJ Abrams pulling strings behind-the-camera, hopes are high for Westworld after a production period beset by delays. Though HBO may not be able to pull in every one of the 8.9million viewers that tuned into the latest series of Thrones, it looks like they may be able to sidestep the unfortunate slide into obscurity that befell their latest high-profile drama, Vinyl.
