UK high street saw slight improvement in January

With a Management Today magazine subscription, you can read about the slight improvement seen in retail sales last month.

If you've got a Management Today magazine subscription, you'll be able to read about the slight rise in UK high street sales in January.

According to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics (ONS), there was a 1.9 per cent increase in January retail sales volume compared to that seen in December.

Year-on-year, the ONS data showed sales volume rose by around 5.3 per cent last month, reports Management Today magazine.

"It's easy to look good against a month where snow hampered deliveries and convinced lily-livered consumers not to shop," Management Today magazine warned, however, the ONS stated it is difficult to calculate the exact effect of the snow and the rise in VAT at the beginning of January.

"Retail figures are known as a famously erratic indicator, and such factors are only going to distort figures even further," the publication warns.

Vicky Redwood, an economist at Capital Economics, warned the Daily Telegraph: "With real household incomes set to fall significantly this year, we find it hard to see consumer spending doing at all well."
