Streep to play Thatcher?

Meryl Streep looks set to play Margaret Thatcher in a biopic of the former prime minister's tenure.

US actress Meryl Streep is set to play one of Britain's most iconic leaders from the past century.

Total Film last week revealed that the New Jersey-born star is in talks with producers over the possibility of her portraying Margaret Thatcher.

The biopic is to be set in 1982, just prior to the Falklands War at a critical time for the former prime minister's career.

Acknowledged by many to be the turning point in her tenure, the two-and-a-half month war helped double her popularity ratings and win her a second term in office.

The movie will be directed by Mamma Mia's Phyllida Lloyd, with whom Streep worked on the film adaptation of the musical.

According to the magazine, Jim Broadbent is also in negotiations to play Maggie's husband Dennis.

Baroness Thatcher was the first and only female prime minister and was in power for more than 11 years from the late 1970s to 1990.
