Surf groups to clean up beaches

Surfers Against Sewage and Barefoot Wines have joined forces again and intend to clean up five beaches across England and Wales.

Surfer's Path magazine has revealed that two organisations are joining forces to clean up a number of coastal sites around the UK.

According to the publication, Surfers Against Sewage is set to work with Barefoot Wines to rid five beaches of rubbish.

The Barefoot Friendly beach tour is entering its third year and is looking for volunteers who live close to the beaches in question to lend a hand.

Cromer, East Witterings, the Isle of Wight's Compton Beach, Pembrokeshire's Newgale Beach and Widemouth will all benefit from the clean-ups between July 28th and August 1st.

Last year, the teams collected more than two tonnes of litter from six beaches and are hoping for similar success in 2010.

The lives of more than one million marine mammals and seabirds are ended each year by the rubbish washed up on beaches - 70 per cent of which is plastic.

Meanwhile, the magazine recently reported on the Clean Water Classic in the north-west of the US.
