Woman & Home catches up with Lesley Sharp

Lesley Sharp discusses being a strong female and how being adopted affected her life.

Lesley Sharp has made a name for herself as one of the country’s most talented actresses, having starred in TV dramas such as Clocking Off, the adorable Bob and Rose and other bit roles in films such as The Full Monty.

Most recently she can be seen in detective show Scott & Bailey alongside Suranne Jones. Woman & Home caught up with Sharp for a quick chat.

Speaking about the strong female friendship in Scott & Bailey, she says: “The great thing about these women is that they are supportive of each other, and the dynamic that often exists between women on television is either career competitiveness or sexual competitiveness.”

As is often the case with actors, she didn’t have the easiest childhood, as her adoptive mother died when she was just 15 and despite a close relationship with her adoptive father, she admits he was wary about her chosen profession.

If anything, she is grateful that she was adopted as she believes it has helped her take on different roles.

“Being adopted maybe makes acting easier,” she says. “Because you don't have a proper identity – you don't really know where you come from – you could indeed in reality be the character you are playing.”
