New Scientist magazine subscription holders will this week be able to read an editorial on a review of a law that could change the future of scientific thinking.
The English libel law, the publication claimed, can stifle free scientific debate throughout the world.
However, it explained that the UK justice secretary is currently conducting a review of the regulations and urged readers to back the reform campaign for the sake of free debate.
The article gave the example of Simon Singh, who found himself in legal trouble after questioning the use of spinal manipulation on children in an article.
The magazine also features an examination of the implications of the proposed re-write of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSMMD) - considered to be the bible of psychiatry.
It explained that the book could have a world-wide impact and has the potential to cause massive disagreements within the profession.
