Countryside magazine has revealed that the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) has fronted a multi-million pound investment into England's rural landscapes.

The organisation's Landscape Partnership hopes to help conserve some of the most cherished areas in the UK and has ploughed £17 million into doing so.

HLF chairwoman Dame Jenny Abramsky said that it marked a significant step towards conserving some of England's most beautiful areas, which is especially relevant in the International Year of Biodiversity.

"It not only encourages people to work together effectively, but gives them a greater sense of involvement and connection to their own local landscape," Countryside magazine reported her as saying.

At least £1.6 million of the cash will go towards restoring the grasslands at the White Cliffs of Dover, as well as preserving the World War II ruins at the site.

The famous cliffs are riddled with lookout posts and hidden rooms that were used during the war to help Britain fight in France and beyond.
