Women clued up on their fashion will know just how popular the little black dress has been as a safe style bet for all occasions.
However, Elle magazine has suggested that it is set to be displaced from its pedestal by another item of clothing that is proving a big hit in 2010.
The little black jumpsuit has been doing the rounds on the catwalks and has been chosen by a number of clued-up celebrities for black tie events.
According to Elle, Marc by Marc Jacobs, Jaeger, Lanvin and Chloe all showed off full-length versions at spring/summer 2010 fashion shows.
Stars like Ginnifer Goodwin have been spotted wearing them, with the Mona Lisa Smile star completing the outfit with statement shoes to "give a fresh edge to the elegant evening trend".
The magazine also praised Chloe Sevigny, who teamed her tux-style jumpsuit with black gloves, and Ashley Olsen, who opted for one in a dusk satin colour with Louis Vuitton pumps.
Ashley Olsen and her sister Mary Kate have become style icons, maturing from their status as child stars to start up their own fashion label.
