Marie Claire magazine reveals half of Brits get sunburnt each year

Marie Claire magazine subscription holders can find out about a new survey which has discovered that half of Britons get sunburnt each year, ignoring warnings about skin cancer.

Any sun worshippers with a Marie Claire magazine subscription might be alarmed to find out that half of Brits get sunburnt every year, despite the constant warnings about skin cancer risks.

Some 46 per cent of 2,000 people polled by Superdrug and Cancer Research UK said they got burnt in the sun.

Shockingly, a third said they would happily do it again in order to get a tan, reports Marie Claire magazine.

The rates of skin cancer, or malignant melanomas, in the UK have risen sharply over the past 25 years.
Now, 10,300 new cases are diagnosed every year.

"What's particularly concerning is that people are setting out with the specific aim of getting sunburn because they see it as part of getting a tan," the magazine quoted Superdrug pharmacist Martin Crisp as saying.

He added: "What they aren’t realising is that there is more going on in the skin than what you see on the surface and, while the sunburn and tan may fade, the damage does not."

Nina Goad, spokesperson for the British Association of Dermatologists, said: "We believe it is vitally important that people understand the importance of checking their skin. If skin cancer is caught in its early stages the survival rate can be as high as 99 per cent after five years."
