Demi Lovato talks about turning 21 and her horrible past

Demi Lovato opens up to Cosmopolitan about her excitement at turning 21 and how she got through bulimia and addiction.

Disney stars seem to be taking over the world… after the Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera/Justin Timberlake (and not forgetting Ryan Gosling) era. We’ve even kind of got over Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens and now it’s all about Miley Cyrus, Selena Gomez and Cosmopolitan USA’s August cover star Demi Lovato.

The former Disney actress not only has a successful music career, but is also a judge on the American version of The X Factor, all at the tender age of just 20.

However, she will soon be hitting the big 2-1. “I look at birthdays as celebrating another year of life,” she says of her upcoming big day. “You’ve made it another year. An entire year. Some people don’t make it to 21.”

Like many young performers before her, Lovato has had to battle her own demons and had a brief stint in rehab to overcome an eating disorder and substance addiction.

Speaking about what gets her through the hard times, she says: “I’m not super religious, but I grew up Christian and I believe in God. When I’m in L.A., I don’t talk about it that much because people are very judgmental, but I just feel like God gave me a voice, not just to sing with. He put me through those things, which seemed horrible at the time, but they were so worth it. With the obstacles I’ve overcome, I can help people.”
