Bruno Mars reveals single was written for girlfriend

Bruno Mars speaks to Rolling Stone about his family band and writing When I Was Your Man for his girlfriend.

Bruno Mars is Rolling Stone’s May 2013 cover star and he looks pretty striking in a leopard print silk shirt with a deep v, plenty of gold bling and a cigarette hanging out of his mouth. We certainly wouldn’t want to mess with him!

He hasn’t always been so intimidating, however, as he talks about his past as a two-year-old Elvis impersonator in his family’s band. Their show was hugely successful back in Hawaii, however when the band broke up his family struggled to pay the bills. “I wouldn’t trade it for anything,” he says of the experience. “Because I feel like I can enjoy this so much.”

Bruno’s sound has evolved over the past couple of years and his latest single When I Was Your Man has been played non-stop on radios around the world for the past couple of months.

He admits that the ballad was about girlfriend Jessica Caban. He wrote the song when he was worried their relationship was coming to an end, however, they’re still together and stronger than ever. It doesn’t make the song any easier to sing though. “You’re bringing up all these old emotions again,” he says. “It’s just like bleeding!”
