The Economist asks what's wrong with Cameron's 'big society'

The Economist magazine subscription holders can find out more about David Cameron's 'big society' ethos and what the concept actually means.

The Economist magazine subscription holders will be able to read about David Cameron's 'big society' ethos in the latest issue.

Cameron's idea of a big society has been around since before his election campaign and has been hitting headlines in recent weeks after he brought it up in a series of recent speeches.

And now The Economist aims to look at what the idea actually means, and how feasible it is, assessing both the good bits and the bad.

"The term is intended to convey a positive vision of Britain's future, an optimism that every government needs to project, especially one committed, as his is, to the fiercest programme of public-spending cuts in living memory," the publication stated.

It added that Cameron's goal is to "craft a slimmer state, but also a nimbler and more responsive one".

The latest edition of The Economist also contains features on Egypt and the eurozone.
