Newsweek magazine tests Americans with the US Citizenship Test

With a Newsweek magazine subscription, you can read how many Americans passed the US Citizenship Test.

If you've got a Newsweek magazine subscription, you can find out how many Americans are actually capable of passing their country's own Citizenship Test.

Some 1,000 citizens in the States were asked by Newsweek magazine to take the test and 29 per cent of them couldn't even name the vice president of the country.

Disturbingly, six per cent of those given the test by the publication couldn't even manage to circle Independence Day on a calendar and 73 per cent didn't know why the Cold War started.

"Don't get us wrong: civic ignorance is nothing new. For as long as they've existed, Americans have been misunderstanding checks and balances and misidentifying their senators," claims Newsweek magazine.

However, the publication suggests the problem is the world has changed and "unfortunately, it's becoming more and more inhospitable to incurious know-nothings - like us".

The US Citizenship and Immigration Services website states the test consists of four different elements - speaking, reading, writing and civics examinations.

Some 39 per cent of those asked to take the test by Newsweek magazine failed.
