Prima's chilli growing tips

Prima magazine has published a number of tips on how to grow chilli peppers.

Category: Lifestyle

Title: Prima

Prima magazine has given its readers some food for thought in the form of chilli pepper growing instructions.

The magazine suggested that the spicy grub is easier to grow than the traditionally popular tomato and can add colour to both the garden and the kitchen.

Seeds should be started off in a small pot of compost, buried around five millimetres deep.

Once the seeds have been watered, the container should be covered with a sheet of newspaper and placed on a sunny windowsill to germinate.

While this is happening, gardeners will have a week or two to prepare a sheltered and sunny spot outside to house the seedlings once they have sprouted.

They should be replanted into larger pots once they have produced three or four leaves and moved outside after two weeks.

Once planted in the earth, they should be fed and watered once a week, with green chillies ready around August or September and reds and yellows left on the plant longer to mature.

Other foods that can be grown in the UK include carrots, potatoes, cabbages, lettuce and strawberries.
