Gael Clichy has told all budding sports professionals to ensure that they are living the right lifestyle as a top training tip in the latest edition of Men's Health.

The Arsenal defender has become an integral member of Arsene Wenger's side since signing from French club AS Cannes in 2003 when still a teenager.

He tells magazine subscribers that key to his continued development is his hard work on the training ground and the importance he places on resting, alongside eating and drinking the right things.

The 24-year-old told the publication: "Before you can consider training, you need to make sure your life outside your chosen sport is right. Eat well, sleep well and try not to go out too much.

"And when training, do not neglect any areas of your body. If you maintain balance in your regime and perform lots of core exercises, your stability and flexibility will improve, and it will be easier to avoid injury."

Clichy added that he tries to get between eight and nine hours of sleep each night, except when travelling home late from away Champions League fixtures and when his family are visiting.

The left back scored his first and only goal for Arsenal in a 2-1 defeat against Stoke City in November 2008.
