Women's Health magazine subscription holders may be interested to know that the publication has looked at the various food-related allergies as part of Food Allergy & Intolerance Week.

It pointed out that Cooking Academy founder and food scientist Kumud Gandhi is keen to underline that allergies and intolerances are two unique issues.

The former is an immune response in the body which rejects the food, while the later is to do with digestion.

The expert explained to the magazine that symptoms of both conditions can be very similar, causing confusion around the topic.

Around one in 200 adult Brits suffer a true allergy to food and the good news for those who have intolerances is that the body can adapt to manage them.

The most common types are wheat, nut and dairy, but humans are able to develop immunity or resistance to their intolerances, the magazine revealed.

Some food allergies are so bad that the sufferer has to carry an adrenaline pen with them at all times in case they have an allergic reaction.
