National Geographic magazine subscription holders may be interested to learn that the magazine has picked up on a recent study of Stonehenge.
The ancient ruins have been a focus point for much research over the years and a recent survey of the earth surrounding the famous stone columns has produced some interesting findings.
According to the study, published in the March/April edition of British Archaeology, there may have been two hedges surrounding the site at one point.
Scientists have speculated that these may have been made up of thick thorn bushes designed to keep prying eyes away from rituals taking place at the ancient site.
The findings suggest that the hedges could have been planted as much as 3,600 years ago, although the only physical evidence that remains are mounds of earth that are almost invisible to the naked eye.
The latest study also revealed a long-forgotten mound at the centre of the site, which may have been a burial spot around which the rest of Stonehenge was built.
Located in Wiltshire, the site attracts crowds throughout the year, but none more so than at summer solstice.
