News of the Day - Barack Obama has been re-elected as president of the USA after tough competition from Republican Mitt Romney, no doubt those of you with The Guardian newspaper subscription will already know.
Despite earlier polls indicating that the candidates were be neck and neck, Obama secured the 270 votes in the electoral college needed to ensure his win and held on to support from the key swing states, including Ohio.
After his win, Obama gave a victory speech in Chicago, saying that during his campaign he has “listened and learned” to what American people want and the he believes it has made a president, stating: “I will return to the White House more determined than ever.”
He admits that it will tough but over the next four years he wants an “economy recovering, a decade of war ending and a long campaign is over.”
