Could India save the planet?

Newsweek magazine subscription holders can read about the possibility India could be the saviour of the planet.

If you've got a Newsweek magazine subscription, you can read an article about whether India could be helping to save the world.

Jairam Ramesh, India's environment minister, made a major impact at the Cancun summit - managing to bring together developed and developing countries throughout the world.

"In Cancun, Ramesh proved himself an international power broker, a star among the world's climate warriors," Newsweek magazine reports.

However, some of his efforts closer to home have been called into question.

He approved a $12 million (£7.4 million) deal for a steel plant, which is "clearly a boon to the country's economy". But the same investment will "also vanquish a track of pristine forest along India's eastern coast", reports Newsweek magazine.

The minister did set out a long list of terms which had to be adhered to when he agreed the deal. This included the Korean company building the steel plant being "limited to just half of the 4,000 acres they originally wanted", reducing the potential environmental impact slightly.

Ramesh is not only famed in India for the impact he has made on politics in the nation, he also writes a widely-read column on public policy and economics for the Times of India.
