No ban for controversial TV advert

The ASA has failed to ban a recent advert, despite it prompting over a thousand complaints.

Readers of Able magazine will be able to learn more about the Advertising Standard Authority's (ASA) decision not to ban a television advert.

Bookmaker Paddy Power's promotional clip depicts two teams of blindfolded men playing a game of football and implies that one player mistakenly kicks a cat after it runs on to the pitch.

In total, the advert received 1,089 complaints from viewers stating that the advert could encourage animal cruelty and was offensive to blind people.

However, according to the ASA, it is not distasteful to create an advert which refers to disabled individuals.

The ASA said: "We noted that the ad featured, and was supported by, members of the England Blind Football Team and showed blind people enjoying a game of football.

"We concluded that the ad was unlikely to be seen as humiliating, stigmatising or undermining to blind people and was unlikely to cause serious or widespread offence."

Also in this issue of Able magazine, readers can find out about the coalition government's proposed changes to the Disability Living allowance.
