British homeowners worried about security should install a smart lighting system, Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine has suggested.

A recent survey showed that many UK citizens are concerned that their garden may be vulnerable to criminal activity.

The gocompare.com study found that a large number of Brits are set to embark on DIY projects this summer to rectify the problem.

It discovered that three-quarters of respondents plan to improve their gardens during 2010, with the average spend predicted to be £420.

Almost a quarter (24 per cent) are worried that their garden is not safe and seven per cent intend to take affirmative action by investing in security products.

Furthermore, almost one in five (17 per cent) will either install a new fence or gate or replace the ones they already have.

Homebuilding and Renovating Magazine assistant editor Melanie Griffiths advised those concerned about security to invest in a lighting system.

"You can get smart lighting systems that can simulate occupancy of the house. That can be a factor for the garden as well. Security lights would be your number one for the garden," she said.
