Scuba divers 'can help with Maldives conservation project'

Anyone with a Sport Diver magazine subscription can read about a new Maldives conservation project.

Underwater fans with a Sport Diver magazine subscription can read about a new conservation project taking place in the Maldives.

Scuba divers are being offered the opportunity to help out in the initiative, which has been set up especially for qualified recreational divers to help out with conservation efforts in the region.

The award-winning conservation organisation Biosphere Expeditions has launched the project with help from the Maldives Marine Research Centre, reports Sport Diver magazine.

Holidaymakers will be able to collect important data from the area, including details about coral, fish and invertebrates.

The whale shark population in the region will also be monitored during the project.

According to National Geographic, whale sharks are the largest fish in the sea. They can grow more than 12m long and feed primarily on plankton.

Divers helping out in the conservation efforts will be guided by marine scientists from the Maldives, UK and Germany, who will be overseeing their work.
