Wayne Rooney has revealed in the latest edition of FourFourTwo that he favours playing in the lone striker role at Manchester United rather than being used as a winger.
The 24-year-old has been deployed as a frontman by manager Alex Ferguson alongside Dimitar Berbatov for much of the 2009-10 season and has rewarded the manager by scoring 15 league goals.
This is a stark contrast to last season, where Rooney spent some time in the wide positions, while both Cristiano Ronaldo and Carlos Tevez played through the middle before moving on to pastures new.
The two-time PFA Young Player of the year told magazine subscribers that although he is liable to get more touches of the ball playing wide, he would still rather enjoy chief goal-scoring duties.
He told the publication: "You have to accept you're not going to get as much of the ball as you would as the man playing off the striker, but it's my second favourite position. Out wide would be third choice.
"You have to run the channels [playing alone up front], hold the ball up, bring team-mates into play."
Rooney has also scored 25 goals in 57 appearances for the England national team, with the record of 49 strikes held by 1966 World Cup winner Sir Bobby Charlton.
