Moby Dick shipwreck discovered

If you've got a Dive magazine subscription, you can read about a great wreck find.

Underwater enthusiasts who have a Dive magazine subscription will be able to read about a fantastic new shipwreck discovery.

Archaeologists have found the wreck of the ship whose captain inspired the famous Moby Dick novel, reports Dive magazine.

The wreck was found off the French Frigate Shoals, on a reef in the north-western islands of Hawaii.

Expedition leader Kelly Gleason said: "Anywhere else in the world, a ship like this in 10 to 20 feet of water (3m-6m) probably would have been looted, or picked apart or just damaged by development," reports Dive magazine.

However, luckily for the divers and archaeologists, the wreck is located in an area protected by the US government because the ocean houses the Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.

The ship, named Two Brothers, was captained by George Pollard and sank in 1823, reports Dive magazine.

After being rammed by a sperm whale, Pollard's previous ship, Essex, sank and this event inspired Moby Dick.

The famous novel was written in 1851 by Herman Melville. It tells the story of a whaling voyage and is considered to be one of the great literary texts of its time.
