Our Rugby World magazine subscribers will be the first to admit that England’s performance in the Rugby World Cup was less than impressive and it seems captain Martin Johnson has accepted responsibility for the team’s failure, as he quit earlier today.
An announcement was made earlier today by the Rugby Football Union and Johnson later confirmed his decision at a press conference in Twickenham.
Johnson said: “I've given this a huge amount of thought since we returned from the World Cup and didn't come to this decision lightly. I think it's in the best interests of myself and the England team that I don't continue on into next year.
"It's been a fantastic three and a half years. I've worked with some fantastic players and a great coach and management group. Whilst we've had our most successful season with 10 wins from 13 we are disappointed with how we ended it with the World Cup. I think it's the right decision at this time."
The news comes just days after Mike Tindall was sacked from playing for the England team and fined £25,000 for his inappropriate behaviour on a drunken evening in New Zealand back in September.
At least the England team will be getting the “shake up” that fans have been asking for since England played in the World Cup.
Those of you with a Rugby World magazine subscription will get the latest news on who will take over from Johnson as captain and who will be replacing Tindall in the final team line up.
