Can ABBA Save Us Once More?

New exhibition reminds us how the Swedish superstars lifted Britain’s spirits during hardship.

ABBA are set to reunite at Waterloo’s Southbank Centre for an ‘immersive experience’ which will allow fans to imagine they live in the world of the Swedish pop band.

The exhibition called Super Troopers, will bring together previously-unseen objects from the ABBA Museum based in Stockholm as well as pieces from the group’s private archives, including photographs, hand-written notes, personal instruments and their Eurovision medals.

An intimate experience, the exposition will recreate memorable moments from Björn, Agnetha Fältskog, Benny Andersson and Anni-Frid Lyngstad’s impressive career, like a replica of their Brighton Grand Hotel room where they stayed during the 1974 Eurovision Song Contest and the Polar recording studio in Stockholm where they recorded their pop gems.

“It will be a different take on Abba we hope,” said producer Paul Denton. “In 1974 Britain economically was not doing that well … what was it about Abba that actually caught the imagination of the public?

“If you look at pop music across the decade, the huge shifts in musical tastes and the emergence of punk – if you look at the charts, Abba were a mainstay in the album and singles charts and there is something about that which is worth celebrating, and we will show what it was about them which captured hearts and minds.”

Abba: Super Troupers is at the Southbank Centre from 14 December to 29 April 2018. Tickets go on sale from Tuesday 4 July.
