London Riots devastation covered by The Independent newspaper

This morning's newspapers show the devastation caused throughout London by rioters.

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll be well aware of the riots that have hit the streets of London over the past three days. If you have an Independent newspaper subscription – or any other newspaper subscription – you’ll have have seen that the front pages of every newspaper show shocking images of vandalised properties, looters running off with their stolen goods and buildings in flames.

On Thursday 4th August, 29-year-old Mark Duggan was shot and killed by police in Tottenham. The shooting sparked riots in Tottenham on Saturday night and the country woke up to see images of the area looking like a war zone.

Sunday night saw riots in Brixton and Enfield, whilst last night they broke out in Hackney, Croydon, Clapham Junction, Ealing and Camden, amongst others.

The rioting was so widespread that both BBC and Sky news had trouble keeping up with which areas were being targeted and the most up-to-date information seemed to be coming from social networking site, Twitter.

This morning, however, The Independent newspaper has reported on the extent of the damage to the capital city, as well as vandalism in Leeds, Liverpool and Birmingham.

The British public have been shocked at the extent of the damage, after several buildings were set on fire, including a party shop in Clapham and a 140-year-old furniture shop which has been passed down over 5 generations.

Twitter has been abuzz today with images and reports from witnesses in the affected areas as well as a campaign to get volunteers to help clean up the mess made by rioters. Twitter account Riotcleanup has been set up, specifically for those wanting to help and they’ve had hundreds of volunteers clearing up and they have described the community spirit as “infectious”.
