Esquire magazine chats to former golf record holder

Esquire has chatted to Zane Scotland ahead of his return to the Open Championship.

With the Open Championship teeing off at St Andrews today (July 15th), Esquire magazine has marked the occasion by talking to one of the tournament's former record holders.

In 1999, a 16-year-old by the name of Zane Scotland took to the famous links to become the competition's youngest ever competitor.

He returns this year more than a decade later in the knowledge that injury almost forced him to give up the sport.

A 2003 car crash just months after turning professional caused back problems that led him to contemplate retirement before the age of 25.

"I put my golf clubs in the garage and took my golf pictures down," he told Esquire magazine.

"In my mind I was thinking 'I'm going to have to find another career'. I thought I would never play golf again."

Despite losing his title as the youngest ever Open Championship competitor to Italian Matteo Manassero, Scotland is happy to be back in the competition where he made his name.

Meanwhile, Today's Golfer magazine recently noted that the Royal Bank of Scotland is staging a photo exhibition in celebration of the tournament's 150th anniversary.
