Dawn French opens up about her life as a single woman

After Dawn French's 25 year marriage to Lenny Henry ended last year, she talks about her new life as a single woman.

If you have a Good Housekeeping magazine subscription, you’ll be able to read the interview with Dawn French in the August 2011 issue.

Dawn French is a national treasure. She’s most famous for her show French and Saunders with comedy partner Jennifer Saunders and playing Geraldine Granger in the Vicar of Dibley. More recently she has written an autobiography Dear Fatty, which was hugely successful.

But it’s her personal life that has been the topic of conversation lately. Last year she divorced her husband of 25 years, comedian Lenny Henry and to say it was a shock to the media would be an understatement.

French then upped sticks from London and moved to Cornwall with daughter Billie to be closer to her family and pursue her new writing career.

Despite being single for the first time in almost three decades, the actress says she’s in no hurry to get into another relationship and doesn’t want to talk about her love life to the respect of her daughter and Lenny.

Although they are no longer married, she says that her and Lenny keep it very amicable. “Len and I are good friends – we were talking yesterday and he’s coming down with our daughter next weekend. We’ve been very good friends for a very long time so, unless we hated each other – and I can’t ever see that being the case – there’s no reason not to keep it friendly.”

The difficult year doesn’t seem to have dampened her spirits too much and she is quite content with her new life in the country.

“At the moment my pleasure comes from writing, and that also gives me time to be here in Cornwall. That is incredibly rewarding, and I feel really glad that I’ve come across this opportunity at a time when it suits my life.”
