Those of you with a Guardian newspaper subscription will already be well aware of the Dale Farm eviction battle that’s been ongoing for a decade now. The legal fight against the eviction of Dale Farm, a Traveller site in Basildon which is home to around 86 families, finally reached a final verdict on Monday and all residents have been ordered to leave.
This has not gone down well with the families who have taken residence in the former scrap yard, many of whom claim they have nowhere else to go. Activists were staging protests last night, blocking off the entries in order to stop bailiffs entering the site but the police entered the site at dawn this morning to ensure that all residents leave.
However, the protest quickly turned violent as the Travellers and demonstrators met the police with resistance, having chained themselves to the main gate and scaffolding.
The electricity supply of the site was cut, angering demonstrators who argued that elderly residents needed access to medical equipment.
A fire was started and after collisions with police officers, it’s been reported by The Guardian online that people have had to be treated for injuries ranging from bleeding noses to chest pains and a back injury. Two people were tasered and three have been arrested.
