How can you make your laundry green?

Colin Butfield, writing for House Beautiful magazine, said reconsidering the way you do your washing could have a huge impact on reducing energy consumption.

He suggested people first look at the amount of energy they are using when doing their laundry and ensure that if considering buying a new washing machine; it is as energy efficient as possible.

Mr Butfield told House Beautiful magazine readers to make sure they do their washing at 30 degrees C and avoid doing a pre-wash first.

"Many machines will also be at their most efficient with a full load ... and others are programmed to be equally efficient at half load," he said.

If you don't need anything urgently, it is best to dry things outdoors, rather than use a tumble dryer, Mr Butfield said.
