If you’ve seen the recent cover of Vanity Fair, which features a pale blonde woman wearing a pointy, dark blue velvet clown hat perching coquettishly on a stool, it is possible you may not have instantly recognised who it was. Part of this is because in her day job as a Saturday Night Live regular and general comedic superstar, Kate McKinnon is usually bewigged, gurning and grinning wildly as one of her many comic characters. It is rare then to see her looking so demure.
It is also down to the fact that despite working for some time in comedy she has not broken through on a global level, but thanks to a politically-charged America’s obsession with satire, the hit sketch show is having a bit of a moment, which in turn, has shone a light one McKinnon as one of SNL’s brightest stars – particularly, her hilarious take on Hilary Clinton.
The Vanity Fair cover and expansive 4,000 word profile therefore, is arguably her biggest to date, and a sign that we can expect to see much more in the future from the Ghostbuster’s star. In the revealing interview, McKinnon chats openly about her childhood, life on SNL and her admiration for Hilary Clinton. She also brings a lot of that same goofy charm to the Annie Leibovitz photospread, looking cool and sartorial while also remaining 100% McKinnon.
