Penelope Cruz To Play Donatella Versace

The Vanilla Sky beauty will portray the glamourous Italian designer in Versace: American Crime Story.

Penelope Cruz has landed her first major television role in the third series of Ryan Murphy’s American Crime Story anthology. Versace: American Crime Story will look at the 1997 murder of Gianni Versace, who will be played by Edgar Ramirez, and his killer Andrew Cunanan played by Glee actor Darren Criss.

For a while it was rumoured that Lady Gaga would take on the iconic designer, a casting which made perfect sense owing to her Italian roots, resemblance to Versace, and stunning performance as the Countess in Murphy’s American Horror Story: Hotel series. But Murphy quashed these rumours in January.

The first series of American Crime Story with The People v OJ Simpson aired last year and was a huge hit winning five Emmys. The upcoming second series will focus on the story of Hurricane Katrina, and the show’s creator has already confirmed a fourth series covering the Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinsky scandal.

Versace: American Crime Story will be based on Vanity Fair writer Maureen Orth’s book Vulgar Favors, and is expected to air in early 2018.
