Gillian Anderson for 'Jane' Bond?

The X-Files star retweeted an image of herself as the famous 007, sparking a flurry of rumours surrounding the possibility of a female Bond…

Ever since the news came to light that Daniel Craig had turned down a reported £68 million to star in any more Bond movies, the internet has been awash with speculation about how will be stepping into Craig’s sizeable shoes as the famed British spy.

Today marked yet another day in the Bond saga, and another famous actor has tossed their hat into the ring. What marks this Bond-hopeful apart, however, is that it’s Gillian Anderson, star of the X-Files, and possible first female incumbent of 007 status.

Anderson’s potential predecessor Craig has also backed the possibility of a female Bond, telling Bustle that “if it works it works.”

“That’s the great thing about film – it’s all about imagination so of course it could happen,” he said, “Not that it’s a huge push, it’s just that anything’s possible.”

Anderson, however, will be competing with the crème de la crème of British acting talent, with other Bond hopefuls being touted in the media being Idris Elba, Damien Lewis, and even Tom Hardy. She’ll have to go some way to dislodge current frontrunner Tom Hiddleston though, after the latter’s starring turn in the BBC espionage thriller The Night Manager.
