Victoria Beckham Opens Up To Elle

The popstar turned fashion designer reveals the person behind the pout

If her recent receival of an OBE for services to fashion wasn’t proof enough that Victoria Beckham was finally free off her Posh Spice alter ego, then her candid confessions in the May issue of Elle ought to be. The glowing cover star, who turned 43 on April 17, revealed all about her life as a fashion designer, mother-of-four and one half of team Beckham.

One of her more surprising confessions, was that she prefers to have a very small friend circle, a result of her demanding schedule. “I’m very close to my sister and a friend I went to school with, and then three or four others. I think a true friend understands that you can’t see them as much as you might want, because they’re busy as well,” she told the magazine, adding: “Everyone I’m friends with has a career and a family.”

And although she doesn’t have a huge group of friends, Victoria insisted she’s “never lonely” and is “good value at a dinner party” as she’s always up for having a good time. “I’m not one of those antisocial, awkward sorts,” said Victoria. “I want to relax and have a laugh. I like to have fun and I think that often surprises people.”

Reflecting on her days in the Spice Girls, Victoria explains how even then, fashion was her first love, telling Elle: "Being in the Spice Girls was so much fun, but I was never the best singer or dancer. I learned an enormous amount during that time, though: the staging, the lighting, the costumes – the package excited me.

“But I love fashion – this is what I'm genuinely interested in… When I look back at my past self, [the way I dressed and behaved] was probably a sign of my insecurities. I feel quite confident in myself now – getting older doesn't bother me."
