In her breakout single she confessed to kissing a girl and ‘liking it’, and now almost ten years later she has accepted an award for LBGT advocacy at the gala in Los Angeles on the 18th of March.
Despite garnering a reputation for her subversive pop and controversial antics, speaking out hasn’t always been easy for the daughter of two protestant pastors, and she revealed in her speech how she would ‘pray the gay away at Jesus camps’. But soon her 'bubble started to burst' and she discovered people who were different from her.
'These people were nothing like I had been taught to fear. They were the most free, strong, kind, and inclusive people that I have ever met,' she said to rapturous applause.
'They stimulated my mind, and they filled my heart with joy, and they danced with joy while doing it. These people are magic, and they are magic because they are living their truth.'
Founded in 1980, the Human Rights Campaign is the largest LGBTQ civil rights advocacy group and political lobbying organisation in the US.
