Selena Gomez Makes Vogue Cover Debut

The former Disney star (and most followed celebrity on Instagram) talks fans, fame and loneliness on tour…

Reclining in a floral two-piece on the front of Vogue’s April issue, Selena Gomez looks completely at home. But the 24-year-old has just secured her first ever cover on the American version of the Fashion Bible – and has opened up to the mag about mental health, the effects of touring and the implication that come with being a Disney child star.

"Tours are a really lonely place for me. My self-esteem was shot. I was depressed, anxious,” Gomez tells the iconic title. “I started to have panic attacks right before getting onstage, or right after leaving the stage. Basically I felt I wasn't good enough, wasn't capable. I felt I wasn't giving my fans anything, and they could see it-which, I think, was a complete distortion. I was so used to performing for kids.”

She also discussed her struggle to distance herself from her Disney character, and highlight the gender differences between former child stars. "For a guy there's a way to rebel that can work for you,” she explains. “But for a woman, that can backfire. It's hard not to be a cliché, the child star gone wrong. I did respect my fans and what I had, but I was also figuring out what I was passionate about and how far I was willing to go."

Currently, though, it looks like Miss Gomez is in a pretty good place right now. "For a change, it feels like I don't have to be holding my breath and waiting for somebody to judge a piece of work that I'm doing,” she reveals. “I'm not eager to chase a moment. I don't think there's a moment for me to chase."
