Weird, huh? Fortunately for the actress, other events that night went some way to distracting the general public from her inability to applaud – but in typical fashion, social media misses nothing, and soon there were videos of Kidman’s interesting technique making the rounds.
In a new interview on Australian radio with KISS FM’s Kyle and Jackie O, however, Kidman has gone some way to explaining the controversial clapping incident.
“It’s because of the rings…that’s why she’s clapping like that,” said Kyle, “she doesn’t want to damage the jewels!”
Kidman then laughed and agreed: “Yes, yes! I’m so glad you clarified that because it was really awkward! I was like, ‘Gosh, I really want to clap’.”
“I don’t want to not be clapping, which would be worse right?" She continued. "[People would think] ‘Why isn’t Nicole clapping?’ So therefore I’m clapping but it was really difficult because I had this huge ring on, which was not my own but was absolutely gorgeous and I was terrified of damaging it!”
So there you have it – Kidman’s giant Hollywood bling got in the way of her ability to perform a basic human function. And you can all stop mocking her now, please.
