Stella McCartney paid tribute to George Michael during the finale of her autumn/winter show at Paris Fashion Week, on Monday the 6th of March. The daughter of ex-Beatle, Paul, sent out an army of lithe lovelies, who swayed and moved to a remixed version of Michael’s hit song Faith.
The show had a distinctly British them throughout, including equestrian motifs, outfits inspired by the Queen’s Balmoral attire, and a sportswear-inspired line evoking London street-style. There was also plenty of what appeared to be buttery leathers and suedes. But as a devoted vegetarian and animal-rights activist, the fabrics are actually ‘skin-free-skin’ AKA modern animal-friendly technical fabrics that are indistinguishable from the real thing.
“Until recently, I avoided using fake [leather] because it never looked luxurious enough,” McCartney said. She has always been mindful that her brand’s luxury status could be devalued by the use of imitation skins that did not compare well to the real thing.
“I am so excited that we have finally developed fabrics that look just as good as the real thing and therefore genuinely pose a question to the industry about why anyone needs to use leather anymore,” she explained after the show.
