Actors have been known to undertake some unusual preparation for film roles, including gruelling fitness regimes and baffling diets. But Lion star and winner of BAFTA 2017 Best Supporting Actor gong, Dev Patel, has probably confessed to the oddest prep of all, saying he sat through episode after episode of the Aussie cooking show to nail his ‘torturous’ Lion accent.
“To change the way I sound, that took a good eight months. It was eight months of solid repetition… I watched a lot of Australian Masterchef!” he explained, before joking that the accent didn’t stick around for long. “It went from my brain as soon as it was done…”
The 26-year-old Londoner fought back tears as he accepted his awarded and afterwards explained just how important the win was to him, saying: “It's a lot to take in. I really did not expect to win. We have been going to all these awards and this one is where everything changed, on home turf with my family here. I used to watch this at home with my family and now for us all to be here, it's kind of an out of body experience.”
With Lion up for an incredible seven Academy Awards later this month, Dev may just have get used the success.
