He is being touted as a future Grand Slam winner, but 17-year-old Denis Shapovalov - the Wimbledon junior champion - didn't cover himself in glory on his Davis Cup debut. The young tennis ace grew frustrated after Brit opponent Kyle Edmund broke his serve and ended up accidentally firing a ball into the eye of the umpire - who was then rushed to hospital.
Although Shapovalov apologised immediately, the incident overshadowed a tournament that had so far been marked for acheivements on the court rather than umpires being injured off it. "It was a strange way to finish," said Kyle Edmund. "I've never been part of something like that."
GB captain Leon Smith added: "A bit of a surprise what happened at the end there and I feel for the young lad. He's a great talent and he's learned a harsh lesson today."
But Shapovalov has also joined some of tennis' most famous faces with his unfortunate umpire-injuring ire. Both Tim Henman and David Nalbaldian have been disqualified from tournaments in the past - and of course John McEnroe had a notoriously quick temper, although even he never gave an umpire a black eye even though he probably wanted to.
