Scarlett Johansson Declared this year’s Queen of Hollywood

Avengers star tops Forbes list of top-grossing actors in 2016

If ever there was a year where it felt like we needed superheroes it was 2016. Turns out, we got them (albeit only in our cinemas) as stars of Marvel and DC films dominate Forbes magazine’s annual list of the highest paid actors of the year. Calculated using the global ticket sales of top actors’ films, the annual list is a representation of who has been in the biggest blockbusters, rather than a reflection of popularity.

Sitting pretty at the top is 32-year-old Scarlett Johannsson, who brought in $1.2 billion at the global box office. Much of this is down to her Marvel Cinematic Universe role as Natasha Romanoff, the Black Widow, in the $1.15 billion global hit Captain America: Civil War - the year’s highest-grossing film - together with the less-successful ensemble comedy Hail, Caesar!

Chris Evans, 35, and Robert Downey Jr., 51, who respectively starred as Steve Rogers/Captain America and Tony Stark/Iron Man in the Avengers epic, tied for second place, despite having appeared in no other films this year. Outside of Avengers, but still firmly in the comic book genre, were Suicide Squad stars Margot Robbie and Will Smith coming in at number four and 10 respectively and Deadpool’s Ryan Reynolds at eight.

British beauty Felicity Jones was ninth after making $805m at the box office, largely thanks to massive hit Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. It also took into account Jones’s part in mystery thriller Inferno and fantasy drama A Monster Calls.
