It’s the first day of the 140th British Open today, held this year at Royal St George’s golf course in Sandwich – though those of you with a Golf Monthly magazine subscription will probably already know that.
This year two of the favourites to win are from the UK which, considering the last British winner was 11 years ago, is great news for us.
English Luke Donald is currently ranked number one in the world. He’s off to a great start and is currently close behind Denmark’s Thomas Bjorn on the leader board. Whilst Northern Irish wonderboy Rory McIlroy is riding on the wave of success after winning the US Open back in June – aged just 22!
The R&A, the governing body of The British Open, have announced their innovative plans for relaying the action to the public through various uses of technology. But whilst they share their very modern platforms for communication they have come under fire for something thoroughly un-modern.
Royal St. George’s golf club has a very strict “men only” rule when it comes to members and this has caused many to accuse the R&A of being sexist, particularly as the club where the 2013 Open is being held, Muirfield, has the same rule.
Should a British player win the tournament, it’s sure to make the game more popular amongst the younger generation and that means females too, despite many clubs’ apparent resistance to allow girls in.
Whatever you think of the gender row, you’re sure to get all of the latest golf news with your Golf Monthly magazine subscription.
