Stab 'just as guilty in race row'

A race row sparked by comments made to Stab magazine has more to it than meets the eye, according to Surfer's Path.

Surfer's Path magazine has picked up on the furore surrounding comments made to an Australian publication by the reigning world champion.

Mick Fanning reportedly called Stab magazine reporter Chas Smith a "F****** Jew", which has led to uproar in the surf and Jewish communities alike.

However, Surfer's Path has pointed out that the real culprit in this drama could actually be Stab - a publication aimed at youth surfers in Australia.

While it did not excuse Fanning's irresponsible behaviour, it suggested that he could be the fall guy in Stab's quest for headlines and notoriety.

It pointed out that the magazine itself is no angel when it comes to such comments, with Jamaican surfer Icah Wilmot being the victim of a racist article by Stab's Jed Smith, who was later forced to apologise.

Furthermore, it has previously published a "Fascist Issue", which was packed with images and articles designed to shock readers and gain more notoriety.

However, Surfer's Path is concerned that the Aussie magazine's attempts at irony could be taken seriously by impressionable young surfers and result in the sport being aligned with racism.

Meanwhile, Surfer's Path is asking readers for their opinions on the entries to the San Sebastian Surfilm Festibal.
